Wellington City Council have put plans to build a permanent cycleway in Brooklyn on hold after losing over half of its funding.
Construction on the project, which was signed off by the regulatory processes committee in August, was expected to get underway by the middle of the year.
But chief planning officer Liam Hodgetts said it had been put on hold.
"Based on the draft Government Policy Statement for Transport, we are unlikely to be able to fully fund this project and we are currently looking at alternative options," he said.
The project included upgrading the bike lane up Brooklyn Road and extending it along Ohiro Road to the Todman Street intersection, as well as seven raised zebra crossings, a bike route to Aro Street, a mobility park on Cleveland Street, and changes to the number and location of bus stops to improve bus journey times.
Waka Kotahi was expected to fund 51 percent through the Transport Choices fund, however Transport Minister Simeon Brown confirmed there would be no funding for the project in December.
There was also no mention of the Transport Choices programme or any alternatives in the draft Government Policy Statement in March.
A trial bike lane was installed in 2021 through Waka Kotahi's Innovating Streets programme.
"In the interim Brooklyn Connections continues to function as a successful cycleway," Hodgetts said.
