A new NZ Transport Agency app will pave the way for digital drivers licences, Digitising Government Minister Judith Collins says.

The [nzta.govt.nz/app app], currently in Beta mode, can be used to pay for vehicle registration, tolls and road user charges (RUC) and will show expiry dates for a vehicle's registration, warrant of fitness and RUC end distance.

It will also show some details that appear on a physical licence like status, licence conditions and demerit point balance but will not show a date of birth or photo.

It is not a valid form of ID and drivers still need to have a physical licence on them when driving.

"The Digital Drivers Licence is an important step towards digitising government, which will ultimately lead us to better digital services and better outcomes for the public," Collins said in a statement.

"I want to encourage New Zealand drivers to help us with testing this new app. Your engagement and feedback will help greatly improve functionality of the services and information available before a version is released to app stores in coming months."

Transport Minister Simeon Brown said the app "will reduce the barriers for Kiwis who want to interact with transport public services, making government more accessible".
