Scottish Cup - reaction as Celtic win Hampden classic on penalties to reach final

Brendan Rodgers jokes that he needs a "therapy" session after that dramatic finish against Aberdeen.

"What a game for neturals watching, but great spirit and credit both teams," the Celtic manager tells BBC One Scotland. "Aberdeen did fantastic, nothing to lose and came and played really well.

"We had to dig in after a slow start, but I'm just happy to be in the final.

"We weren't tight enough in our positioning and they were quite bright in midfield and combined well to get through. We gave them too much space, we were away on the attack before we secured the ball and they scored a very good goal. You have to give them credit for that."

As for goalkeeper Joe Hart's penalty miss before saving the crucial one, Rodgers adds: "He says he still wants another penalty! We've worked on it the last couple of days - we know who's taking the penalties, but it was a great save and he's the hero in the end."

Victory and progress to their 60th Scottish Cup final means Celtic are in pole position for a league and cup double.

Aberdeen interim manager Peter Leven is "proud" of his players despite their semi-final defeat.

"I thought the boys gave everything," he tells BBC Scotland. "It's a sickener at the end - penalties are a bit of a lottery - but we went toe-to-toe at times with Celtic.

"At times, we had to suffer a bit with the low block, but after that, we showed a bit of character and made enough chances in the game to score more.

"We had two academy graduates stepping up taking penalties - I'm proud of them as well. I thought they gave everything, I've said to them that's the benchmark to end the season.

"Just gutted it ended that way. I said that to them, get your heads up - we've got to rest and recover and we're back in on Monday to go again."

Another Celtic goalscorer, James Forrest, pays tribute to Aberdeen's resilience.

"When I came on and scored, I thought we'd see it out at 2-1, but fair play to Aberdeen, they kept coming back," he tells BBC Scotland.

"It shows a lot about the team that stepped up at the end as well, fair play to them. We had a couple of chances at 2-1 to make it 3-1, same at 3-2, but we just couldn't see it out, which I think would have finished them off.

"But fair play to Aberdeen they dug in, both teams today done themselves proud."

Celtic goalscorer Matt O'Riley, voted man of the match, tells BBC Scotland: "Lots of relief to be honest. A lot of emotion as well.

"I had every faith in us in that penalty shoot-out and thankfully got it done.

"Fair play to Abereen, they played well, but I think we had enough chances to win the game and deserved to win.

"We are a tight group behind the scenes and that shows in these moments."

There's not much that this game hasn't delivered on in terms of drama, late goals, missed penalties, goalkeepers going down with cramp during the shootout, a goalkeeper steps up and misses.

It's literally delivered. It's set the bar particularly high as far as Scottish Cup semi-finals go, that's for sure.

The resilience Aberdeen have shown has been outstanding, against all odds. Celtic could have romped it this afternoon - they had the potential and the quality in the squad to do so - but Peter Leven got it spot on this afternoon.

Celtic didn't play well in the first half. They sorted it out at half time, but they allowed Aberdeen back into the game through poor defending and they grew in confidence.

We couldn't see it happening, but it was a great comeback from Aberdeen. The penalty shoot-out will be a disappointment for them, but they will take credit out of this.

What Aberdeen gave to the semi-final was immense. They looked down and out in the second half, but they found something else.

Peter Leven can be more than proud even in defeat. Celtic obviously will be delighted to get into another final, but Aberdeen can take a huge amount out of this game, believe me.

I said when Joe Hart missed his penalty it's a strange position when you're the goalkeeper.

You can then go in and be the hero - and that's what he's done.

But it is holders Celtic who are through to the Scottish Cup final in a topsy turvy affair at Hampden.
