A man has been arrested after two people were been assaulted and a third stabbed overnight in Hawke's Bay.

Police were called to reports of two people assaulted at a Queen Street address in Wairoa about 4.40am.

They were known to the accused, Inspector Danny Kirk said.

While police searched the area for the man, they received reports of a stabbing on Marine Parade about 4.50am.

One person was found critically injured at a commercial address.

The police search continued and the accused - " the sole suspect in both incidents" - was nabbed at 5.55am

"All three are recovering in hospital and are in a stable condition," Kirk said.

Police said it was an isolated incident but a bigger police presence would be seen in the area.
