People have been left with stab wounds after an "unprovoked attack" at a Rotorua roundabout.

Police said the victims were driving in a van on Friday when they were accosted by a "large group" from two other vehicles.

The group attacked the occupants of the van, leaving them with stab wounds that required hospital treatment, detective senior sergeant Mark van Kempen said.

Police had arrested three men, aged 28, 30 and 35, over the attack.

They were expected to appear in Rotorua District Court on Thursday.

The trio had been charged with aggravated robbery, wounding with intent and participating in an organised criminal group.

Police had also confiscated the two vehicles believed involved in the Friday attack, van Kempen said.

"A pistol unrelated to Friday's incident was also recovered."

Investigators were also working to establish if a shooting at Te Ngae Shopping Centre car park on Monday, where a man received a gunshot injury to his leg, was linked to the roundabout attack.

"We expect to make more arrests and lay further charges in relation to these incidents," van Kempen said.

"We understand the fear and concern events like this inflict on the community and we will continue to pursue every lead to hold those involved to account."
