A health warning has been issued for residents in a Northland town as a vegetation fires blazes through wetlands.

The fire started west of the Dargaville township on Scottys Camp Road at about half-past 6 Thursday evening.

Fire Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) said three ground crews and three helicopters had been helping battle the fire.

It said the 15 hectare fire was not contained, but the nature of a wetland fire meant it was slow moving and did not threaten any properties.

Te Whatu Ora Northland region asked Dargaville residents to be aware of smoke and ash blowing in the area from a north-westerly wind.

"Nearby residents who may be affected by the smoke and ash should stay indoors, close windows and doors, and refrain from undertaking outdoor exercise or activities," it said.

"Residents are advised to call Healthline on 0800 611 116 if they have any related health concerns or experience any respiratory difficulties as a result of smoke and ash."

FENZ said fire crews could be at the site for another two days.
