Contact Energy (Contact) has scored the highest of five New Zealand companies included in the 2023 Dow Jones Sustainability™ Index Asia-Pacific (DJSI Asia-Pacific), reflecting significant progress within the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) objectives of the business.

DJSI is the longest running and leading global benchmark for corporate sustainability and is based on an analysis of ESG performance. It assesses issues such as risk management, branding, corporate governance, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards and labour practices.

To gain entry to the 2023 DJSI Asia-Pacific, companies needed to achieve a Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) score of 68. As of 11 December 2023, Contact achieved a score of 74.

Each year the CSA criteria seeks greater sustainability outcomes from corporates, meaning it’s more challenging to achieve a high score.

“It’s now been almost three years since we set our Contact26 strategy to lead the decarbonisation of our country. The place we call home,” says CEO Mike Fuge.

“Our vision to build a better Aotearoa New Zealand means being good stewards of the environment, helping our communities thrive by being a good neighbour, and creating collaborative respectful partnerships with tangata whenua.

“We are focused on our strategic pillars to grow demand for renewable electricity, to develop flexible renewable electricity generation, to decarbonise our portfolio and to create outstanding customer experiences.

“As a company we are an integral part of daily life in New Zealand and we’re acutely aware that our every action, good and bad, has a marked impact on the wellbeing of our communities - today and in the future.”

This is Contact’s second year on the index; and in 2022 Contact achieved the second highest score of any New Zealand company.

The DJSI Asia-Pacific inclusion comes just days after Contact won the Sustainability Leadership Award at Deloitte’s Top 200 Awards, which celebrates outstanding performance among New Zealand’s largest companies.
