Six people have been injured in a two-vehicle crash between Wanaka and Haast, in Otago.
Emergency services were called to State Highway 6 (Haast Pass-Makarora Road) in Makarora about 1.50pm
Three St John ambulances and four helicopters took the injured to hospital. Four of them were seriously hurt, police later said, and two moderately.
Police said the road was blocked for hours after the crash, one lane opened operating under stop/go traffic management on Tuesday evening.
A 30km/h temporary speed restriction was also in place.
