One person has died and another is fighting for their life in two separate, near-simultaneous crashes on major state highways, one in Levin the other in Greytown
Both involve mobility scooters, police say.
And a pedestrian was struck in Levin this evening, just metres from the fatal accident.
In the latest incident, police received a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at Levin's Queen St East intersection with Redwood Grove at 6.07pm.
The road is currently blocked while emergency services attend. One person is injured, but the nature of their injuries is unknown.
Only hours earlier, a major crash involving a mobility scooter on State Highway 1 in Levin closed the road about 2.20pm. The victim has since died.
Police were called to the incident at the intersection of Queen St East and Oxford St at 2.20 pm.
A woman working nearby said she didn't see the crash, and could just see a truck stopped in the middle of the intersection.
It is understood the truck was the other vehicle involved in the crash.
The road is likely to remain closed for some time while police complete investigations.
Meanwhile another serious crash in Greytown, also involving a mobility scooter.

The incidents caused the main routes into the capital to be cut off, which have since been reopened.
A police spokesman said they received a report of a collision between a single vehicle and a person on a mobility scooter.
