The review was paused in 2019 in response to a request from Kāi Tahu to consider the implications of the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki Supreme Court decision.

The decision provided more clarity on the roles of tangata whenua and the Department of Conservation in governance.

Doc said it would be undertaking a public targeted consultation later this year, as it was important to get the governance of the Aoraki national park right.

A spokesperson said work on the draft plan was progressing well.
