The baby was taken to Gisborne Hospital with critical injuries at around 10.30am on 31 December.

The baby was later transferred to Starship Hospital in Auckland.

After receiving critical care while at Starship the baby was flown back to Gisborne last Thursday and re-admitted to hospital in an improved condition, police said in a statement.

A 24-year-old man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He will appear in the Gisborne District Court on Wednesday.
