Manchester City are unbeaten in the Carabao Cup since October 2016

Riyad Mahrez scored twice as holders Manchester City came from behind to thrash League One Wycombe and reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup.

The visitors took a shock lead through Brandon Hanlan, but Kevin de Bruyne levelled seven minutes later.

Mahrez claimed his double either side of half-time, with Phil Foden and Ferran Torres also beating veteran goalkeeper David Stockdale.

Substitute Cole Palmer, 19, added the sixth with his first goal for the club.

He ran from the halfway line before curling in a fine left-footed shot from 20 yards.

It was a successful night all round for City's youngsters, with Pep Guardiola handing senior debuts to academy graduates Conrad Egan-Riley, Luke Mbete, Finley Burns, Josh Wilson-Esbrand, Romeo Lavia and James McAtee.

Defender Wilson-Esbrand was particularly impressive, with his excellent control and cut-back assisting Mahrez for City's second strike.

Victory means Guardiola's side are unbeaten in the competition since October 2016, although they did lose last season's semi-final second leg to Manchester United, and have reached the last 16 for the fifth successive season.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola: "I am just going to say thank you very much to all the Academy. They have many good players, not just one or two. We can count on them absolutely. With their skills and desire, they have got it at this club. I am so proud to be manager of this club."

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth: "The first 22 minutes were special! What a moment for the fans who travelled all this way. A few months ago they were locked in their homes and couldn't see us in the Championship. Those scenes when the goal went in were incredible."

    Well done to Wycombe for making it this far, also taking a shock lead in this game. Nice to see a Premier League club take this competition seriously, a strong squad with a nice mix of experience & youth, Well played City.

    Manchester City/Chelsea/United have always given this Cup the respect it deserves..

    For lower league clubs a draw against one these clubs brings in much needed revenue...

    In recent years City have dominated the competition... Manchester United and Chelsea have given it their best shot but come up a little short...

    You have to give Manchester City the credit they deserve...

    Leaving aside all the predictably boring comments, I think it was a thoroughly enjoyable game of football with a good crowd and brilliant support from Wycombe fans. For Wycombe there was an encouraging start and for City fans chance to see the skills of academy youngsters who played well. Foden was excellent and it was a good fitness test for him and DeBruyne.

    Half a dozen comments in and the haters are at it already, zzzzz. Great team selection from Pep, a strong front 5 and a rookie back 6 made all 3 results over 90 mins possible if City misfired. City too strong in the end, Foden was outstanding.

    I like Manchester City.... I always have... 2nd division/PL... It makes no odds...

    For the most part they have been in the shadow of United but just got on with things.... Their fans have always been loyal and supportive... I like that...

    Onwards and upwards. Good result after the Southampton debacle. Shame we couldn't create many chances v Saints like we did here. The young players did very well. Lavia in midfield looks superb. Also Wilson-Esbrand. Lots to look farward to. CTID

    Disgusting that the Men in Suits are considering scrapping the League Cup, all for the sake of £ per usual, not Football.

    Tonight's match, tho' a City 6-1 Wycombe result, showed us why it should be saved.
    Some great goals, Youth opportunities, great Away day for Wycombe fans & Players & Club (£) - they even went 1-0 UP.

    Too many games ? Nonsense - a great opportunity for new kids !

    Some promising young talent.

    Lavia great in the Ferna role. Wilson-Esbrand and ghe whole young defence showed good character.

    Wished Edozie will play, hope he gets a decent run in the cup games.

    B.t.w. need not to mention the other youngster who ran the show.
