It is the first time that two French teams will compete in the semi-finals of the competition with Paris St Germain facing RB Leipzig in the other Franco-German game in the last four.

The result also means that it is the first time since 1991 that no team from England, Spain or Italy will compete in the last four of Europe's premier club competition.

For City and their manager Pep Guardiola it is the third season in a row that the team has gone out in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and they remain without a place in the last four under their Spanish coach.

"Different year, same stuff. I think the first half wasn't good enough, I think we know that, we started slow, we had not many options, but the second half we played really well... it's a shame for us to go out in this way," Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne told BT Sport.

"We need to learn. It's not good enough, and that's it," he added.

O'Sullivan clings to day one lead at the Crucible

Ronnie O'Sullivan leads Kyren Wilson 10-7 after the first day of snooker's world championship final after letting slip an 8-2 lead at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre.

O'Sullivan was 6-2 up after the underwhelming opening session and won the next two frames before the evening unravelled.

The five-times champion proceeded to lose five out of seven frames as fellow-Englishman Wilson grew in confidence in his first final.

The final is best of 35 with the winner collecting 500,000 pounds in prize money.

The day after the two players had pulled off final-frame semi-final heroics always risked falling flat and neither player fizzed immediately in front of a restricted and socially-distanced crowd of around 300.

Bennett crossed the line 31 seconds behind the winner, Dane Jakob Fuglsang, after being distanced on the final climb overlooking Lake Como.

"I tried with everything but I couldn't drop him…" Bennett said of Fuglsang.

"During the race I felt I had good legs and wanted to attack on the Civiglio. I just couldn't follow Fuglsang that last time. I'm disappointed but in a few I'll be happy for this result."

It's the best ever result by a New Zealander in one of cycling's monuments and comes three days after Bennett broke through to win the semi-classic Gran Piemonte.

The monuments are the five most prestigious one-day races in the sport and no New Zealander had previously finished on the podium at one of them.

The Portland Trail Blazers have secured the final spot in the NBA playoffs.

CJ McCollum scored 12 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter to help the Trail Blazers rally from a late deficit to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 126-122 in the Western Conference play-in game near Orlando.

Portland now move on to a best-of-seven first-round series against the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers beginning Wednesday (NZT) at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

"Thanks a lot for your love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me as Retired," he wrote on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/tv/CD6ZQn1lGBi/?igshid=1hznyicmt87hg with a video montage which had images from his 15-year international career.

The message ended speculation around the international future of the enigmatic 39-year-old, who quit test cricket in 2014 and has not played for India since the team's semi-final exit at the 50-overs World Cup in July last year.

"It is the end of an era," Indian cricket board (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly said in a statement.

"His leadership qualities have been something which will be hard to match, especially in the shorter format of the game.

"Every good thing comes to an end and this has been an absolutely brilliant one," added Ganguly, himself a former India captain.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah called Dhoni "one of the greats of the modern era".

No play possible at the Rose Bowl

Bad weather has continued to dog the second test between England and Pakistan as a combination of bad light and drizzle wiped out the whole of the third day at the Rose Bowl in Southampton

Although the weather appeared to improve in the afternoon, two inspections found that the outfield was still too wet and play was finally abandoned for the day after the umpires had a third look in deteriorating light.

Only 86 of a possible 180 overs were bowled on the first two days as Pakistan, batting first, reached 223-9 with Mohammad Rizwan unbeaten on 60. With more bad weather forecast, a draw seems to be the most likely result.

Pakistan, who trail 1-0 after England's dramatic victory in the first test, need to win to give themselves any chance of taking the three-match series.

The top-six teams qualify for the playoffs, with Sydney and Melbourne City already confirmed as the top-two finishers who will automatically advance to the semi-finals.

The Phoenix currently occupy third place in the table, with the Brisbane Roar in fourth and Perth Glory rounding out the top six.

Another disruption for MLB

Major League Baseball (MLB) postponed a Saturday and a Sunday game between the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates after a Reds player tested positive for COVID-19.

The two games - which were set to take place in Cincinnati - were put on hold while MLB conducts additional tests and contact tracing. The identity of the player who tested positive was not disclosed.

The postponement is the latest disruption to MLB's shortened season, which started last month after weeks of delay due to the coronavirus outbreak, as positive tests on teams including the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals forced last-minute schedule changes.

Last week the league introduced stricter health and safety protocols in order to mitigate the risks posed to players amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
