In what has been described as a blow to Northern Marianas economy, the US Citizenship and Immigration Service has slashed 3000 places from the Transitional Worker programme for the 2018 fiscal year.

The programme's quota for the current finanical year is just under 10,000.
The CNMI Governor, Ralph Torres, said the cut would be a tremendous blow to the economy and the decrease could result in businesses having to make difficult choices and families having to make incredible sacrifices.
Mr Torres has also asked for help from the CNMI Delegate to the US Congress, Gregorio Kilili Sablan.
Mr Sablan has a pending bill extending the worker programme by another 10 years and increasing its cap to 18,000.
