An Auckland lawyer is preparing to lodge a police complaint against a woman who accused her boyfriend of rape.

The woman, whose name is suppressed, alleged she was kidnapped for three days, locked in her boyfriend's room, tied up, tortured and raped repeatedly in 2013.

The man was arrested early last year on 36 serious charges.

The charges were dropped a year ago and a judge ultimately awarded the accused man $20,000 in costs.

His lawyer, Graeme Newell, said he would shortly ask the police to investigate the false complaint.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said the file was being reviewed to see what lessons could be learnt from the investigation.
