Former rugby league superstar Jarryd Hayne has announced he has not been selected for the Fiji sevens team which will compete at the Rio Olympics.

On his official Facebook page, Hayne said he had a meeting with head coach Ben Ryan on Friday and was told he had not made the side.

While being disappointed not make the team, he said he "knew [he] wasn't ready" despite trying "everyday and in every way possible to make this team".

He expressed his enjoyment at having been involved in the Fiji sevens set up, saying he was welcomed into the team "as one of their own family".

The former Parramatta Eels fullback, who famously had a stint with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL last season, is remaining with the team, before heading home to Sydney this ewek. He will decide on his future once there.
