Papua New Guinea Hunters rugby league coach Michael Marum says his players cannot afford to get carried away by their winning run.

The Hunters won at top the table Townsville last weekend to climb to fourth in the Queensland Cup standings.

It was their fifth consecutive win and puts them in a strong position to make the top six playoffs, with eight of their last 12 games on home soil.

But Marum says, with a challenging league and expectant fan-base, his players cannot afford to be complacent.

"I think there's a lot of pressure. After we're playing well there will be players coming through and just probably thinking that we're just going to win any game easy now but really important for us to be really focus on each game at a time so back home we can't just switch off and stuff like that".

The Hunters team had the bye at the weekend and host Ipswich on Sunday.
