Europa League: Inflatable banana thrown at Feyenoord-Roma game

Fourth official carries an inflatable banana down the touchline
The match was halted moments after referee Clement Turpin had shown Feyenoord substitute Mitchell Te Vrede a straight red card.

Feyenoord's Europa League match against visitors Roma was suspended for more than 10 minutes after an inflatable banana was thrown towards the pitch.

Several objects landed close to Roma's Ivory Coast striker Gervinho, who went on to score the winner in a 2-1 victory as the Italians progressed to the last 16 3-2 on aggregate.

"It was right to suspend play," said Roma coach Rudi Garcia.

"We could have opened a shop with all the objects thrown from the stands."

Gervinho later tweeted:external-link "The most important is that @OfficialASRoma is qualified, the rest ... #Forzaroma #FeyenoordROMA"

Both teams left the pitch in the 55th minute, after Feyenoord's Mitchell te Vrede was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Kostas Manolas.

Rotterdam police had detained 17 locals and one Italian before the game.

City mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb drafted an emergency order that police could invoke if hooligans begin rioting, giving police enhanced powers to detain fans and eject them from the city.

Feyenoord fans rioted in Rome before the round-of-32 first leg last week, clashing with police and damaging buildings.

In August 2014, Uefa ordered Feyenoord to close a section of their stadiumexternal-link for a European game and pay a €45,000 fine after their Champions League match against Besiktas was marred by racist chants and the throwing of missiles.

Meanwhile, Dutch media have reported Feyenoord coach Fred Rutten will leave the clubexternal-link at the end of the season, following their exit from the Europa League.

Rutten, 52, was appointed at the start of the season as Ronald Koeman's replacement on a one-year rolling contract.

Feyenoord lie third in the Dutch league, 20 points behind leaders PSV Eindhoven.
