3:56 pm on 25 September 2014

Two police officers were attacked with a knife after trying to restrain a man near Taupo late last night.

Both officers needed stitches for the deep knife cuts received when they approached the 50-year-old man from Turangi.

Earlier in the day, police had been told there were concerns for the man, who they described as "disturbed".

Police said he was found about six hours later in Turangi and the officers were attacked soon after.

The constables were initially taken to Taupo Hospital for treatment but were now at home.

The man is to appear at the Rotorua District Court today charged with wounding with intent.
