Students mourn crash victim

Telford Rural Polytechnic students and staff are in mourning after hearing a student involved in a car crash last Thursday night near the polytechnic has died in Dunedin Hospital.

Police last night released her name - she was Miemie Cloete (17), of Rotorua, a first-year equine student.

She never regained consciousness after the car in which she was travelling crashed head-on with another car on the Balclutha-Owaka Highway.

Miss Cloete died in Dunedin Hospital on Saturday.

A 22-year-old Israeli tourist, Or Eliyahu Ben-David, was killed in the crash.

Five students, all aged either 17 or 18, were flown to Dunedin with serious injuries.

The names of the four students still in hospital have not been released by police.

The Otago Daily Times has been told they are from the North Island.

One, placed in an induced coma, underwent extensive surgery yesterday.

Her condition is thought to be serious.

Telford chief executive Jonathan Walmisley said doctors anticipated she would make a full recovery but it was too early to say how she was after her operation.

Another student had "extensive surgery" at the weekend and doctors hope she can be discharged from hospital towards the end of next week.

The other two students were "sitting up" and steadily improving.

They are expected to leave hospital later this week.

Mr Walmisley yesterday said a memorial service for Miss Cloete would be held at Telford on Thursday or Friday, at the same time as the girl's funeral service in Rotorua.

This had been suggested by her parents, he said.

Telford's thoughts and prayers were with the families of the injured students and also the family of the tourist who was killed.

"This is just a tragic waste of life. This accident has taken two lives and it's an unmitigated tragedy."

Senior Telford management had spent time at Dunedin Hospital at the weekend, liaising with doctors and the families of the injured.

This week's memorial service would be open to all staff and students.

Police and emergency services who attended Thursday's crash scene would also be invited.
