End-of-year exams are under way with thousands of secondary school students sitting NCEA and New Zealand Scholarship examinations.

Nearly 1.9 million NCEA answer booklets have been delivered for about 120 exams, while almost 9,000 students will sit scholarship exams.

This year's largest exam is level 1 English, which more than 46,000 students will sit on Tuesday.

The smallest exam is scholarship Latin, with 19 students sitting the test on 3 December, the final day of exams.

NCEA students will receive their results by mid-January, while scholarship students should receive their results a month later.
