Dunedin testing emergency response

10:08 am on 27 September 2008

A multi-agency exercise is taking place in Dunedin today, to test local emergency response systems.

The scenario is a train crash in the Parera Tunnel in the Taieri Gorge, and will involve eight agencies including the emergency services, Civil Defence, Red Cross and Victim Support.

The emergency response co-ordinator, Inspector Alastair Dickie, says about 150 people, including actors, will be involved.

He doesn't expect the exercise will alarm the public, although he says people may notice more emergency vehicles than usual in the area.
