Surfers upset at Dunedin beach closures

2:10 pm on 14 September 2008

Dunedin surfers are annoyed at local beaches being frequently closed because of a sewage problem.

Dunedin city council closed St Kilda, St Clair and Middle Beaches for the day on Saturday.

Swimming and surfing was prohibited because of high levels of bacteria from faecal material from a nearby sewerage outfall pipe.

South Coast Boardriders Association spokesman Brett Hastie says the beaches are being closed every two weeks.

He says many surfers report falling sick after a day on the water.
