Goosen eagles last for Qatar win

FINAL LEADERBOARD
(GB&I unless stated):

-15 R Goosen (SA)
-14 N O'Hern (Aus)
-13 E Els (SA)
-12 G McDowell, R Green (Aus), S Appleby (Aus)
-11 A Romero (Arg), H Stenson (Swe)
-10 Wen-chong Liang (Chn), T Jaidee (Tha)

Retief Goosen won the Qatar Masters in spectacular style by holing a 50ft putt for eagle at the final hole.

Goosen came from a stroke behind Aussie Nick O'Hern to win by a shot with final round 69 for a 15-under total.

O'Hern, chasing a first European title, found the rough with his drive at the last and scrambled his way up the fairway and two-putt for a par.

Goosen's fellow South African Ernie Els was third on 13-under par after a closing round of 67.

Three players shared fourth place on 12-under par - Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell (67) and the Australian pair of Stuart Appleby (66) and Richard Green (72).

Two-time US Open winner Goosen, 38, had not won a tournament for over a year until Sunday's last-gasp heroics.

Two up with two to play, I thought I was in good shape

Nick O'Hern

"It is a great honour to be the champion here and finally win a tournament for the first time since the end of 2005," he said.

"It's nice to win one early on as it gets you going a bit for the rest of the year.

"I knew that on the last four holes everyone seems to make a better score.

"The 15th was very disappointing, I felt my chances were gone then. I hit a good three-wood on 16 and went for it but it was a poor chip shot and poor putt.

"But I told myself 'I have got to birdie the last two holes to have a chance'.

"I hit a nice nine iron on 17 that ended up pretty close and I made a good putt and on the 18th I finally hit the fairway. I missed it on the first three days but I hit a good drive and hit a nice solid three-wood."

O'Hern, meanwhile, was philosophical in defeat and said: "Two up with two to play, I thought I was in good shape.

"I didn't hit the ball well at all today but just my short game kept the round going, which is what it is all about.

"I would have given myself a chance of a birdie on the last. The tee shot missed the fairway by a couple of yards and it just had a horrible lie.

"If I had my wedge in my hand I might have had a chance. I wasn't really expecting him to make an eagle, but as they say, expect the unexpected."

Paul Lawrie had been well placed to challenge but he failed to produce a single birdie as he finished on nine under.

Paul McGinley finished a shot behind under after he failed to carry a good performance on from the front nine.

The Irishman carded four successive birdies from the first and dropped one shot but just one birdie on the back nine and another bogey ended his slim hopes of challenging.
