Google sets date for Nest Cam, Gemini for Home reveal
After years of waiting for new Nest smart gear from Google, it appears we’ll actually get our wish next month.  “Gemini is coming to Google Home,” a post reads on Google’s official X account. “Come back October 1st,” the message continues above an animation of a Nest camera peeking into the frame.  A link labeled “sign up for updates” sends users to the Google Store, where they can sign up for news.  It’s not clear what type of reveal Google is planning for October 1; it could simply be a news release, or perhaps it will be a full-on media event. Google has previously held “Made by Google” events in the fall for new Nest devices. The social media post is just the latest hint from Google that new Nest hardware is on the horizon.  Last month, Google let slip footage of a new Google Home smart speaker during its big Pixel event. The device, which looks roughly the size of an Amazon Echo Dot or an Apple HomePod Mini, is the first glimpse we’ve seen of a new Google smart speaker since the Nest Audio in 2020.  Shortly thereafter, Android Headlines published leaked images of the speaker (which it referred to as the “Google Home Speaker”) along with a new slate of Nest Cams, including a wired outdoor camera, an indoor cam, and a new Nest doorbell, all with 2K resolution.  It’s been four years since Google last refreshed its Nest camera lineup, with the current crop of Nest Cams capped at 1080p resolution.  Google has already detailed its Gemini smart home plans, with Gemini at Home slated to roll out in an early preview next month.  Set to replace Google Assistant, the new Gemini-powered voice assistant will respond to natural-language commands, handling such duties as smart home control, calendar and shopping list management, setting timers and reminders, as well as engaging in “natural back-and-forth discussion” via Gemini Live.  While we’ve seen plenty of chatter about a new Google Home speaker and Nest Cams, there’s no word on a new Nest smart display. The most recent Google display, the second-generation Nest Hub, landed in 2021, while the larger Nest Hub Max debuted in 2019.  This news story is part of TechHive’s in-depth coverage of the best home security cameras.
