Microsoft’s guidance for non-upgradeable Windows 10 PCs is inadequate If you haven’t heard, Windows 10 is coming to an end on October 14, 2025. Well, sort of. You’ll still be able to use your Windows 10 PC even after that date, but Microsoft won’t be supporting it anymore—no more updates, no more security patches, no more help if things go awry.
We don’t recommend sticking with Windows 10 without support, and neither does Microsoft. You’ll be leaving yourself increasingly vulnerable to malware, hackers, and compatibility issues. So, what should you do? The “best” option going forward would be to upgrade to Windows 11, but not all computers meet the requirements for Windows 11.

Windows 11 Pro
Microsoft’s advice to users who can’t upgrade their Windows 10 PC? According to a newly published support page, you should check if it has trade-in value towards a brand-new Windows 11 PC. If it doesn’t, you should recycle it responsibly according to local regulations.
Of course, these aren’t your only options. Microsoft fails to mention that you could conceivably install an operating system other than Windows to keep your PC going for a few more years, for example. Be sure to check out our guide to all the ways to save your Windows 10 PC.
Don’t feel like installing a new OS? Consider selling it. You can probably fetch an okay price on sites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or even OfferUp. Otherwise, you can donate it to someone in need or reuse some of the parts to build a new computer.

Microsoft’s 50th anniversary Windows wallpapers are actually pretty great Microsoft is celebrating its 50th anniversary this week, and it’s offering some new Windows wallpapers to mark the occasion.
Over on Microsoft’s Windows blog, Microsoft has published a basket of different wallpapers for Windows PCs, which you can download here for free.
They’re actually cooler than you think! Microsoft’s designers have played with the concept of “50” in a number of different ways: with the generic Microsoft logo, for example, or with tulips. Each wallpaper is available in a 4K option for modern displays, with widescreen versions as well. There’s even versions specifically designed for dark mode, adding a little bit of mystery to the whole affair.
(This is actually Microsoft’s second attempt at providing free wallpapers for its 50th anniversary. Our sister publication PCWelt didn’t exactly love Microsoft’s first try.)
My favorite is actually the “50” motif done up in cascading Solitaire cards, reminiscent of the victory celebration that you receive for completing the game. Mahjong is there — but no Minecraft? Who knows — maybe that will be added later. The Windows entry is cute, too.

If you’re a gamer, don’t forget the Xbox dynamic background, too.
Microsoft will celebrate its 50th anniversary on its Redmond, Wash. campus on Friday, April 4, with company executives scheduled to speak at an outdoors event. We’ll be there. Will Copilot Search be one of the announcements?
While we’ll have more coverage as it develops, check out how Bill Gates is marking the milestone by releasing the source code that got Microsoft on its way, and my favorite tech demo ever — again at Microsoft.
